To an untrained eye, Bhil can be confused for Gond, because both art forms can look very similar.

But look a little keenly and youโ€™ll realise the marked differences between the two styles.

Bhil and Gondare tribes are from around central and western Madhya Pradesh. Their culture and customs have similarities, which are reflected in the paintings of these communities.

Bhils use only dots in all colours and these are scattered or drawn in a neat formation. (Images 2 and 3)

Gond art has evolved with its signature patterns including dot, dash, lines etc in black. (Image 1)

It means a lot when a film produced in 2013 is still appreciated and included in festival programs around the world :)

'For the Love of a Cat' was recently screened at a Slovenian-Polish Festival: StopTrik International Film Festival @stoptrik The Festival curator Ms. Brina Fekonja has sent us an official letter where she mentions why she included the film in a special program: Animated World Mythologies

The film is based on a Buddha story by Rosalind Wilson, created in the Bhil Art Style by students of ร‰cole Mondiale World School

Today is the last day of this Bhil art series..

As I keep saying , it is only because of the hardwork of the artists who still wanted to keep their tradition alive; we were able to witness these many artforms still in our motherland..
This post is a tribute to all those artists and the NGO's, activists who are behind them by organizing many fairs, exhibitions and bring out these artforms through many documentaries and articles..
Below is the list of all famous Bhil artists who still follow their tradition with pride.

Artist: Subhas Amliya, Bhil:
16x12 inches, Mix medium on paper.
(Price on request))

Subhas Bhil, son of senior artist Gangu Bai, was inspired to paint by his mother and has been painting for few years now.

The Bhil Tribe which is the native of Central and Western India is the 3rd largest community in India. This tribe is a very close knit community that marry only within their class and caste and share close relationship, based on mutual love and respect. They are highly A superstitious tribal people who abide by a set of norms where their religious life is represented by various spirits, gods and goddesses, ghosts, dieties which are often celebrated and appeased by their way of life. They resort to Singing, Dancing and painting during feasting in order to mark events, store memories and combat despair and disease which are performed in rituals, symbolism, tradition that translate effortlessly into their art form and are woven with rich textures with a profound relationship with nature and their โ€œ Adhivasi Lifeโ€ which is their legacy.
Their various subjects to painting based on their land, climate, harvest, death and marriages etc are all to invoke gods and spirit to maintain fertility and richness.
These are created by mastering the dots, skillfully repeating equal sized uniform dots in rythmic pattern, colors which are a distinct identity of Bhil Art, with multiple layers of symbolism often inspired by maize kernels their staple, each group of dots representing their ancestor or diety, where each of the artistsโ€™ distinct style or signature can be decoded only by an expert eye to this art form.

Bhils were highly religious people who strictly followed a set of rules and regulations which is represented by variety of spirits, gods, goddess, dieties etc in the form of art, sculpture etc. One of such traditonal stone painting is called as ๐—š๐—”๐—ง๐—”๐—Ÿ๐—” ๐—ฃ๐—”๐—œ๐—ก๐—ง๐—œ๐—ก๐—š.

Gatala is more of a kind of ritual where they build a tombstone in memory of the person who expired recently. A man riding a horse is usually carved in a soft stone along with sun and moon on the top right and left side. Badva(the priest) will then decide on the date to sanctify this stone in the crop field of the related family, the family members pray the spirit to take care of them and the entire village. This ritual is common in Warli tradition as well..

Traditionally ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ ๐€๐ซ๐ญ was done only by the Badvas(priest/shaman) or some male memers specially allocated for to perform this art. I am not sure about the reason as of now, but the same tradition was followed in most of the tribal art forms. Only some set of people were allowed to perform it traditionally

Today's painting is one of my favourite bhil art with so many colours and varitions in it. I have tried aquatic theme in Bhil art, ofcourse the reference was taken from Google and I developed it further...

Tomorrow will be the last day of BHIL ART series. Do share your views and feedbacks in the comments please

Geeta Bariya: Bhil Art:
12x16 Inches, Acrylic on paper.
(Price on request)

Geetaโ€™s introduction to Bhilart was not by birth instead she fell in love and married a man from the community.. She was born into a family of laborers where she and her three siblings never got opportunity to education due to poverty. Fortunately, for her, her husbandโ€™s uncle was a Bhil Pithora artist who along with his wife would be painting with him while Geeta as a newly wed, would spend all her free time observing them since she was always inclined towards art. Gradually she picked up the brush as she was encouraged by her uncle in law and started mustering courage to fill in colors here and there. While cooking in her kitchen on a โ€œchulhaโ€ she would draw with the coal from her wood-fire stove and would draw all over the floor of her kitchen. This art in the Bhil community is traditionally done by the male elders in the family however seeing this, her husband supported and encouraged her to learn this art form. She never imagined that what started as charcoal drawing on her kitchen floor would one day get her commissions, exhibitions and residencies. Her love for this art grew deeply and became her passion, her life, where she is eternally grateful to her husbandโ€™s unconditional love and guidance for he never has stopped her from pursuing her passion. In many instances her community has criticized her as she had to come out of โ€œpurdahโ€/veil for her work however she says itโ€™s her work that demands her to do so and She candidly, nonchalantly states that she couldnโ€™t be meeting government officials, clients and customers, from behind a cloth. She feels proud of her work which has given her much satisfaction, financial independence, fame and priceless experiences.

Bhils give more importance to dance and music as a part of their rich cultural history passed on them by their ancestors for generations.

Apart from painting bhil people are very talented in sculptural work and make beautiful horses, elephants, other animals and local dieties out of clay.

๐“–๐“ช๐“ต ๐“–๐“ช๐“ญ๐“ฑ๐“ฎ๐“ป๐“ช is a game for young boys and girls. They fiz a long slippery wooden log on the ground and tie some coconuts on its top. When the boys starts climbing, the young girls would stop them by hitting with the stick. Whoever climbs to the top and takes the coconut wins the game and has the right to ask for any girl to get married.

The main inspiration for dotted patterns in bhil art is believed to be the Maize- which is one of their staple food. The arrangement of dots in symmetric patterns is very much similar to the corn kernel arrangement.

This is the only painting in which i have come up with human motifs instead of animals, birds or other natural elements.. A very rough outline of human figure filled with colours and dots is the way in they they represent humans in bhil art usually.

Bhils have rich and unique culture.

Do you know that ๐†๐ก๐จ๐จ๐ฆ๐š๐ซ
is the traditional folk dance of bhil tribe?? Usually young girls performs this dance and declare that they are stepping into the shoes of woman. Tatooing is also a traditional custom of bhils which all woman should do before marriage.

Bhil art is so special because it has an ancient connection with the nature and it has successfully travelled down many generations without losing its essence. This art is often ritualistic where people convey the story of their land through this art form. We could see animals, birds, trees, sun , moon , dieties and people in their art form. The story of their leaders, god, birth and death are recorded in the form of art. These paintings are even offered as gifts to gods and goddesses at the time of festivals.

A simple elephant and peacock motif painted with poster colours. Most of the dot fillings are done with 000 brush and few with finetip pens.

Not much importance is given to the shape and structure but still the picture clearly conveys what it has to.. Thats the beauty of Tribal art forms..

There are various mythological references to Bhil tribes.

Ramayana says that a Bhil woman offered Jujubi fruit to Lord Rama when he was in jungles, searching Sita. Some researchers also says that Eklavya belongs to this Bhil tribe and some even says that Rishi Valmiki is also a Bhil..

Bhil tribes are excellent archers( hence the name Bhil derived from tamil word "VILLU") who fought in various wars against Mughals and Britishers. They were employed as warriors by Rajput kings in those days.

Bhils worshipped their local dieties and nature mostly. This is the most common practice among all the tribes those days. They do not have any temple. They usually erect a stone where they bury their ancestors and start worshipping them. One of the famous god not only for Bhils but for warlis, gonds and many other tribes is "VAGHDEV"-the tiger god. As most of these people lived in the forest and their main source of livelihood is agriculture, they worshipped the animal which they feared for..

๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ ๐š๐ซ๐ญ would adorn the clay walls of their village homes as it is made of mud. Beautiful images would be painted with neem sticks and other twigs, and natural dyes would be used to fill with patterns. The patterns are solely in the hands of the artist, some would spread the dots randomly, some would spread it symmetrically in straight lines, some in circles etc.

๐“๐“ซ๐“ธ๐“พ๐“ฝ ๐“ถ๐”‚ ๐“น๐“ช๐“ฒ๐“ท๐“ฝ๐“ฒ๐“ท๐“ฐ:
Its done on a cartridge sheet with poster colours and artline fine tip pens. It took nearly 5 hours for me to finish this painting with such intricate details. Its just the wide spread of colours followed by dot filling technique, but it takes so much of time, patience. detailing to complete a painting.

Bhil is the second largest tribe of India after Gonds and Santhals. They are widely spread across different states of India from South to North and few in Eastern parts as well.. Although Bhili is believed to be their own language, after their migration to various parts of the country, they have started taking up the local languages there and each of their clan now have a different culture and beliefs.
The name "BHIL" is said to be derived from Tamil word "VILLU" known as bow. Some of the great epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata also have mentioned about this bhil tribe

๐–๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ ๐€๐ซ๐ญ?
A not so perfect outline and structure filled only with dots of different colours makes this art stand unique among others.

I have given a very simple outline to the deer and the bird without much curves and filled with different patterns of dots in this painting. This is done on a cartridge sheet with poster colours.

Let's keep exploring more about this tribe and their art in the coming week.

Dubu Bariya: Bhil art:
12 x 16 inches, Acrylic on paper.
(Price on request)

Bhil Art, probably, the oldest form of tribal expression, which in the past few decades have been getting their due amongst the art aficionados all over. Bhils have more of an unrestrictive, almost naive style, where they use only dots which are all scattered or placed in neat formation. One can say that Bhil art is more of an โ€œimpressionistโ€ art, in a way, and this is one strong distinction between the Bhil and Gond art like for eg: in Bhil art paws of cat will be only an impression however in Gond art the paws of cat will resemble the actual shape. Itโ€™s established like other tribal art form, Bhil art too is a reflection of their cultural and community practices, which is presented joyfully, thoughtfully and perhaps even comically with varied approaches depending on the artists and their life experiences however the back drop, the techniques, colors and basic principles are the same. Surprisingly, the form and process in techniques found in these arts are quite similar to that of Aboriginal art-form. A recent anthropological research suggests that during the great migration, particular tribal groups reached Australia via the Gond region which is the โ€œKondโ€ referring to the Green Mountain in Dravidian idiom.
In Dubu Bariyaโ€™s art too, one can see the nascent relationship between
human-nature, the animal kingdom, life from their villages, their religious and cultural practices. Therefore like his art suggests.......birds took magical mystical wings, Glorious peacocks preened in all its glory, delicate, surprisingly colorful crow perched pecking on the most vibrant buffalo, shy deers danced with their exaggerated trees like antlers, families walked home through the dense magical forests and rich golden fields of paddy glistened in harmony.
