Yesterday, Girls in Trades Massachusetts held their 4th annual MA Girls In Trades Conference and Career Fair @ibew_electric Local 103 Hall in Eastern MA.

@massgovernor Baker and Lt. Governor, Karyn Polito attended and spoke to over 530 female CTE high school #buildingtrades students & more than 61 adults from 28 CTE schools about the importance of #apprenticeship programs and the value in choosing a rewarding, life-long career in the trades.
With over 30 booths from union trades, contractors and state entities and several workshops, vital information was provided to students about the purpose of unions, what each apprenticeship program entails and how they can apply.
NASRCC’s Local 327 BR/O, Liz Skidmore; Local 346 BR/O, Amelia Phinney; Local 339 journeywoman and foreman, Gelmira Alba spoke as part of the “How to become a union tradeswoman” workshop which gave hundreds of students an in-depth insight into a life as a carpenter and life as being a member of the Carpenters union, while Carpenters Local 328's Michelle Wright and Barbara Surjbally spoke with the girls one-on-one at the #NECTF booth.

Great job, everyone!

“We are Team #UBC all the way! Across the country, union carpenters show not only their dedication to these veterans, but their amazing skills and professionalism.

We’re so grateful to be able to work with them everywhere we go.” - JARED ALLEN, founder of Jared Allen's #HomesforWoundedWarriors.

In partnership with Jared Allen’s Homes for Wounded Warriors, members of #NERCC this spring turned over brand new homes…to two military service veterans who were wounded in combat: Paul Skarinka of Hanson, Massachusetts, and Tom Block of Derry, New Hampshire.

An All Pro and future Hall of Fame @nfl defensive lineman, Allen started his foundation after a trip to visit troops in the Middle East and was also inspired by his family’s military service. To this point, they have completed 13 homes across the country and have 4 more under construction, all with the help of union carpenters. @commodorebuilders served as the #generalcontractor on the Skarinka home, while North and South Construction served the same role for the Block home.
On both projects, the contractors were assisted by crews of #unioncarpenter #apprentices and instructors as well as member-volunteers.

Officially a Journeyman Carpenter now! #journeyman #nomoreapprenticeship #nectf #unioncarpenter #blessed #workhardplayhard

The Construction ICRA Training Curriculum was developed by the Carpenters union with leading experts who specialize in infectious control, public health and hospital environments.

It's a training program that makes skilled, journey level carpenters more aware of the unique concerns and risks of building projects in facilities that provide patient care. It then teaches the most modern techniques to reduce risks. As with patient care, the value of the program is its focus on awareness, prevention and attention to detail.

We put a little extra pride into some projects and this is one if them.

Today, Jared Allen for Wounded Warriors held a key ceremony for a home we helped build in Derry, NH, for Sergeant Tom Block and his family.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Led by instructor—and veteran—Matt Attarian, weekly classes of apprentices completed the home with regular visits and encouragement from Block.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The home is the second project with the foundation of the future Pro Football Hall Of Famer Jared Allen's that carpenters have turned over this spring.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Block was part of a joint task force that prevented a high profile suicide bombing attack in Afghanistan when wounded by an improvised explosive device. It happened during his fourth combat tour in 2013.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The project was managed by North and South Construction and received valuable support from the Army Ranger Lead the Way Fund.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Congrats to Sergeant Block and his family and thank you for your sacrifice and service!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Check out these photos from the Albany Training Center, where 2nd year apprentices recently took the Scaffold Erector class, learning how to erect Mobil Tower scaffold and Tube & Clamp scaffold--correctly and safely!
This 32-hour hands-on OSHA-compliant qualification course covers proper procedures required for safe and efficient scaffold erection. The three major types of supported scaffolding are emphasized. A certification, valid for 4 years, will be issued upon successful completion of this course.
Nice job, apprentices!

Pile Drivers Local 56 and the New England Carpenters Training Center in Millbury, Mass., were

pleased to host students from the metal fabrication program at Assabet Valley Vocational High School in Marlborough and the welding and metal fabrication program at Franklin County Vocational High School in Turners Falls.
Each school brought a group of students to tour the school and learn more about future career options. While most of them already have experience with welding, few have ever considered underwater welding until they saw the NECTFs underwater welding tank in use.
While apprenticeships might be in the near future for some, students hear from instructors and other members who attended college and earned degrees before staring their careers in the trade. One of them was Assabet Valley graduate Hayley Kurbs, who earned a degree in Marine Biology before joining Pile Drivers Local 56.
Sister Kurbs was training this week and was one of the members who spoke to students, including during a session lead by Local 56s Ziven Drake and Local 56 Apprentice Elizabeth Hogan who addressed the dozen or so female students who visited. The three Local 56 Sisters spoke to students about the real world experience of being in a nontraditional career for women and their love for their work.
Franklin County Instructor John Passiglia was making his first visit to the training center and was impressed. "This was a great tour. This is an amazing facility. It shows me and the kids that there are some great opportunities for them. I've been very impressed."

Four years ago I made one of the hardest, yet best decisions of my life.

Although I certainly miss teaching and coaching I wouldn’t be where I am today without the skills and benefits of the Union. These past four years have flown by! I met a lot of great people along the way and learned a hell a lot! I’m finally a journeyman! #unioncarpenter #graduate #nectf

Yesterday in Hanson, Mass., a "Key Ceremony" was held to turn over a home built by a team including union carpenter apprentices, journey level volunteers and Commodore Builders.

Organized by Jared Allen's Homes for Wounded Warriors, the home was built for wounded veteran Paul Skarinka and his family. Pictured here are some of the instructors and volunteers who worked on the project, as well as NECTF and NERCC leadership, Jared Allen and his team, and most importantly, the Skarinka family.
Thank you to all for your commitment to making this project happen and coming out to celebrate its completion!

Carpenters Training Center in Syracuse, NY
The New England Regional Council of Carpenters is excited to show one of our newest training centers in Syracuse, NY.

Opened in the Fall of 2018, the facility will serve an important need in the area, for both carpenters and union employers, as well as the area construction industry. Having sufficient skilled trades workers remains the highest concern for construction employers nationally and there is no training—for apprentice level or journey level carpenters—that matches what’s offered by the Carpenters union.
Thanks to all of the members and employers who worked on the project, including:
LeChase Construction Services, Construction Managers
Putrelo Building Enterprises, Henderson-Johnson Co., Airways Door Services, Dick Tile & Marble Co., Robert H Law, Inc., Titan Roofing Inc., Schneid Construction, Masonry, Burns Bros. Contractors, O’Connell Electric, Davis-Ulmer Sprinkler Co., Otis Elevator Company, Integrated Industrial Services, and John H. Cook, Jr. Painting Contractor.
