Dr. Swati Mehta, adult hospitalist at CommonSpirit Health Sequoia Hospital, California and Executive Director of Quality & Patient Experience at @vituity_pm , a physician-owned and led partnership in acute care innovation that is committed to transforming healthcare for the benefit for all, is on The Busy Leader’s Podcast this week. Dr. Mehta shares her tools and best practices for improving patient care and physician burnout.

Dr. Mehta started her journey in healthcare leadership about 10 years ago when she was a hospitalist and part of a 20-physician team. While on this team, her Medical Director unblinded each physician’s patient experience scores. Dr. Mehta shares how these scores became the catalyst for her building the best practices for herself and her team to improve patient experience while becoming the only minority leader in her organization.

Dr. Mehta set out to develop techniques designed to make improving patient experience and healing burnout among healthcare workers real and achievable. She shares some of her valuable tools such as the 6H Framework, which is designed to connect patients with their clinical teams; R.I.S.E., a technique to address healthcare burnout amongst your team; and R.E.A.L., a tool to connect with patients virtually. If you are looking to reinvest in yourself and your team this is the episode for you!

Before PA school I worked as a medical scribe in family medicine, emergency medicine, and hematology/oncology for two years total.

Here is my badge, a Snapchat video of me working, and me and some coworkers at our work holiday party!

Comment your favorite clinical experience and how you got it so we can all learn about the opportunities out there!

*The rest of my clinical*
Part 3/3
I worked as Chief MA at that office until I graduated.

As soon as I graduated I started working for a Scribe company called Vituity. I really loved scribing. It was awesome to get to know the doctors and see how the physician interacted with the patient. (Although I missed having hands on work)

I only did this for a short while, as I realized, I need to start making a serious plan to get into med school; which for me included ACING the MCAT and doing a postbac.

After solo MCAT studying, and a successful first semester of postbac, I was officially poor again and needed to get work. I got extremely lucky and the medical office at my school needed a new MA!!! This ended up being a crucial experience in my personal statement.

Finally, I did research while I applied to med school, but really found myself missing clinical work, so I started volunteering at a free clinic on the weekends.

Some things I learned

1. Your activities are important but you need to prioritize whatever is “missing” or needs to be stronger in your application
2. It never hurts to ask. I got the 2nd MA job because I told my supervisor for another job that I was premed and looking for more clinical work, and she found it and advocated for me.
3. Missing clinical work is a really good sign you’re on the right path 🤣🥰

Celebrating jobs n stuff 🍾

I want to thank Vituity Healthcare for the last decade of my career! It is so hard to say goodbye!

When I first started with this partnership, I had no idea what my career would look like when I achieved the level of “senior partner”. ⁣

As a Vituitan, I learned that innovation and creating opportunities is how best to predict the future. I have been part of various Vituity committees and projects that I look back on with such fondness knowing they have contributed to my foundation for the evolution of my career. I have cared for thousands of patients and they each have made me a better, more complete person. It has been humbling serving alongside my amazing partners who deserve all the accolades possible! ⁣You have taught me so much and have supported me in my path of professional and personal growth. Special thanks to CEO, Dr. Imamu Tomlinson, who saw my potential early on and never lets me forget it! ⁣

While it is bittersweet to have resigned the same week of receiving this amazing award, I know that my purpose is to create a more equitable landscape for patients in our healthcare system and for women in male-dominated fields while working clinically in Washington. I’m hopeful that our paths will cross again in the future and until then, I’ll always be a Vituitan at heart!

Reaccreditation ☑️ Congratulations Clinical Education team huge accomplishment!

I’m not sure I have ever been as touched as I was today.

I’ve been so worried about Adam and our family’s health ,because of his job in the hospital. I was in a coffee chat this morning when I started to cry because of how nervous I am for him/ us. A few hours later these showed up at my house with a note saying “thank you for all you do Adam. Cristina we’re always here for you.” 😭
Gestures like these during such scary times mean the World. I will never forget this, these ladies brought sunshine to what feels like a storm. My heart is full ❤️
